Packaging EPR Schemes: Lessons from Europe – Webinar 1 (Sweden)

27/02/2024 7:00 am - 8:00 am CET

Online

27 February 2024 | 5:00pm-6:00pm AEDT

In this webinar, Reloop’s Director of Circular Economy Development, Anna Larsson will discuss the substantial shift and modernisation of Sweden’s 30-year old packaging EPR (Extended Producer Responsibility) scheme.

Sweden is often referred to as the ‘cradle’ of Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) in Europe. The country’s packaging EPR scheme was launched in 1994, the same year as their beverage container deposit scheme. They are once again leading Europe in revolutionising the industry, moving from producer-funded and operated (through a network of public place collection centres) to a producer financed and local government-operated scheme. This shift will see kerbside recovery become the backbone of the collection network with funding coming from EPR fees on producers.

In changing from a ‘bring’ to an ‘at-home’ collection system Sweden aims to increase the quantity and quality of recovered material to meet circular economy and recycled content targets.

The webinar will be co-hosted by WMRR CEO, Gayle Sloan and Director of Reloop Pacific, Robert Kelman.
