UN Plastic Treaty Recommendation
Emissions and releases of plastic
A critical step in preventing plastic pollution is to tackle the emissions and releases across the lifecycle of plastic products.
The ambitious measures outlined in Reloop’s proposed treaty text encompass production, waste management, fishing gear, waste generated at sea, secondary microplastics, and littering.
Parties must be mandated to prevent, reduce and eliminate emissions and releases from plastic polymers and products, including microplastics, into the environment.
To prevent “dumping” of products and potential disparities in emissions and releases, the proposed text emphasises the importance of collaboration between Parties, industry sectors and stakeholders.
There should be common standards applied across Parties, alongside shared sustainable practices, innovations and information exchanges in how to manage plastics.
